I Finally Made Something Worth Selling!

Hi all,

My students are working on addition and subtraction strategies right now.  I needed a center for counting on and counting back, so I decided to go ahead and make one!

My students gave this two thumbs up!

Students turn over 3 cards: cornucopia, pilgrim, and a leaf card.  The pilgrim cards tell them whether to count on or count back.  There are also pilgrim cards with + and - signs on them.

My students played this as a game.  If they answered correctly, they got to keep the pilgrim card. The other cards got mixed back into the pile.

Students can also tap the leaves on the leaf card as they count forward or backward to help keep track.
To practice counting on and back, we got out our big number line and practiced walking on the numbers. The students love this!  (Sorry for the blurry picture, all my other ones had too many faces.)
So, to celebrate, this new Thanksgiving activity is on sale at TPT for the next week.  Get it now for half price!  I hope this is a useful resource.  Click here to purchase!

    2. Hi Melissa,

      After I thanked you for finding me here, I mentioned that I got the number line at a math workshop and didn't know the name of the company it came from. I posted that, and then managed to find it on an internet search.

      So, here it is: http://www.learningresources.com/product/step-by-step+number+line.do?sortby=ourPicks&sortby=&&from=Search

      It really is one of my students' favorite things.

  2. What amazing and creative ideas! I am a 1st grade teacher as well and sometimes find myself racking my brain trying to think of ways to engage my students in ways that I haven't before, all the while making what we're learning fun. I love hearing what others have been successful with. I just read a great book you might like, it's called "Teach Like A PIRATE" by Dave Burgess. You can check him out and get the book right from the website http://daveburgess.com/. Thanks for sharing!
