My students are working on addition and subtraction strategies right now. I needed a center for counting on and counting back, so I decided to go ahead and make one!

| Students turn over 3 cards: cornucopia, pilgrim, and a leaf card. The pilgrim cards tell them whether to count on or count back. There are also pilgrim cards with + and - signs on them. |

| My students played this as a game. If they answered correctly, they got to keep the pilgrim card. The other cards got mixed back into the pile. |

| Students can also tap the leaves on the leaf card as they count forward or backward to help keep track. |

| To practice counting on and back, we got out our big number line and practiced walking on the numbers. The students love this! (Sorry for the blurry picture, all my other ones had too many faces.) |
